Multi Monitor Stand
What Does the Term Multi Monitor Stand for?
Multi monitor, or multiple monitors, refers to the use of more than one monitor, connected to the same computer, and controlled by a single operator using the same mouse and keyboard. This allows the operator to visually interface with more than one application at the same time. The multi monitor stand facilitates the positioning of multiple LCD monitors, enabling you to compare multiple charts or to copy and paste data across multiple LCD screens.
Does a Multi Monitor Setup Improve Productivity?
This is debatable and cost certainly plays a major part in this argument. However, it can be argued that by increasing your visible space on your desktop computer, your efficiency can improve considerably depending on the nature of the task at hand. Good examples would be activities such as video editing, audio recording, medical imaging, video surveillance and stock trading.
Different Ways to Set Up Multiple Monitors
Before you rush into acquiring your multi monitor stand, you may want to consider the different options available to configure your computer to communicate with multiple LCD screens.
- You can buy a pre-configured multi monitor computer that can support up to 10, or more, flat screen monitors. This may not be the cheapest option but you are sure to land up with a configuration that carries the manufacturer’s warranty.
- You can buy USB to VGA, or DVI, adapters that will enable you to accommodate extra monitors on your existing computer via any of the standard USB 2.0 ports. This configuration will suffice for general office applications and surfing the web. However, it may not be an ideal option for high intensity graphical applications such as HDTV, Blu-ray and CAD.
- You can replace your existing video card or add additional video cards to your computer, in accordance with the number of monitors that you want to support. This will be a more effective route than the adapter route, however, it does require a fair level of technical expertise to set up correctly.
Once your multi monitor stand is set up, you would have to enable all your monitors through the Advanced Settings in the Display option in the Windows Control Panel.
Conclusion
Multiple monitor configurations were originally reserved for high-tech applications such as video surveillance and server management. However, as they become more and more affordable, we are starting to see them being used in many other environments such as software design and even for general office applications. They may therefore be well worth investigating as part of your productivity improvement drive.
As part of that process you might want to have a look at some multi monitor stand reviews done by actual buyers of the various products.
